Is It Time To Replace Your HVAC System?

We’re saying goodbye to the 80-degree temperatures here in the Granbury area and finally welcoming those pleasantly cool mornings and comfortable afternoons and evenings.

This is the perfect time of year to tackle your big HVAC projects, such as replacing older, less efficient systems.

So when is a good time to replace your heating or cooling units? Well, if they are rusty rattle cans on life support, your Daffan Cooling & Heating tech will certainly let you know. However, there are some good rules of thumb to follow based on the age of your units.

Often it can be a very wise decision to replace a heating or cooling unit because today’s units are way more energy efficient than they were a decade ago. Yes, there will be an up-front cost, but remember to calculate the monthly savings you’ll enjoy with a state-of-the-art, super-efficient system.

Take a look at your old paperwork–or think back to the year your HVAC equipment was installed–and follow these guidelines from the Department of Energy on the average useful life of heating and cooling systems:

  • If your air conditioner or heat pump is more than 10 years old, consider replacing it with an Energy Star unit to save up to 20 percent on heating and cooling costs.
  • If your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old, consider replacing it with Energy Star units. An Energy Star-rated furnace can be 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace. Energy Star boilers can be 5 percent more efficient than standard boilers.
  • If your HVAC equipment has been needing more and more repairs every year, it’s a sign that you’re due for a new system.
  • If you notice some of these problems around your home: excessive dust, noisy HVAC equipment, high humidity, rooms too hot or too cold — it may be time to upgrade to a new, modern HVAC system.
